The Trail That Changed Me: My Journey Across the Hampta Pass
The Trail That Changed Me: My Journey Across the Hampta Pass
Blog Article
The mountains have a sort of silence that shouts louder than the city could ever have.
My life was a checklist before the Hampta Pass Trek: deadlines, meetings, scrolling feeds, and the continual buzz of "what's next?" I yearned for something raw and pure. Something enormous. A actual thing.
That's when I came over the Hampta Pass Trek on TrekYaari's website, a path guaranteed alpine meadows, glacier crossings, river valleys, and high deserts. Five days would allow me to go from the verdant Kullu Valley to the austere, dry Lahaul scene.
I gave it no second thought. I made a booking for it.
What what next transcended mere travel. It was a restart. A peaceful revolution inside of me.

Day 1: Manali to Jobra to meet Chika - Into the Wild
Our group convened in Manali, charged with both a little anxious energy and much enthusiasm. The crew of TrekYaari welcomed us like old friends—calm, competent, and bursting with anecdotes. The actual trip started after a little drive to Jobra.
We entered the woodland, the air cooler and the silence more profound. Chika's path was easy, meandering among pine trees and fields ablaze in wildflowers. Every movement was like removing a layer of noise.
Our first campground beside the river looked exactly out of a postcard: mountains on all sides, a brook bubbling close, and stars so brilliant they didn't seem real.
I slept that evening to the sound of flowing water, not traffic.
Second day: Chika to Balu Ka Ghera - The Valley of Colour and Chill
We got up early, the sky a mellow orange behind snow-capped mountains. The walk today to Balu Ka Ghera was a rainbow of colors: purple blossoms, yellow ones, green hills, and the odd gleam of snow.
Though toes stinging, we traversed icy streams barefoot with great spirits. The advice of TrekYaari kept us safe and laughing. The ground changed gradually; the vegetation faded, the chill deepened.
Under tall mountains, Balu Ka Ghera, sometimes known as "bed of sand," sat patiently. Like the brink of something, the last breath before the climb.
Third day: Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass to Shea Goru - The Day I Let Go
Today we climbed. Hampta Pass was 14,101 feet, and, to be honest, I was afraid. What would happen should I miss it?
The trail does, however, impart a lesson: you do not have to conquer the mountain. You merely need to move one step forward. Then again.
Snow under our boots was crushed. The climb was unvarnished and steep. But I ignored everything else as I ascended, wind screaming and heart pumping.
To the left are verdant valleys. To the right are moonscape deserts. It felt like straddling two worlds.
I held back tears. but I could have.
Though the climb to Shea Goru was difficult, icy, the excitement carried me. Under stars that seemed close enough to touch, we pitched our tent on a levelbed of snow.
Day 4: From White to Brown - Shea Goru to Chhatru
The change occurred quickly. We were in snow at one point. The next is a rugged desert.
The path to Chhatru was strange, bizarre, and really lovely. We moved across echoing canyons and calm valleys. Though hardly any flora, the textures and quiet revealed a great abundance of life.
Our last campsite, Chhatru, was as though the end of a chapter. Some hikers continued on to see the renowned crescent-shaped beauty of Spiti, Chandratal Lake. I lingered behind allowing the silence to settle one last time.
Day five: Chhatru to Manali, the return
Slipping once more from desert to forest, silence to buzz, we drove back to Manali across the Atal Tunnel. Nonetheless, something had changed.
The cacophony did not overpower me any more. I discovered silence within.
